Spotlight Attorney - Bill Slagle
What's your favorite part of working at Childers Hewett Slagle?
It's a firm full of professional lawyers, but we in no way resemble a stuffy law firm, which is by design. From day one, John, Carly, and I have expended a great deal of energy making sure the office culture is collaborative and supportive and that none of us take ourselves too seriously. We can't change that we are lawyers, but we sure don't have to act like them!
What do you do at our firm?
Pretend to be a boss, write terrible blog posts, and offer some of the greatest legal advice of this generation.
What is the last book you read?
The Terminal List by Jack Carr.
Are you a sports fan? Who are your favorite teams?
Football and baseball are my jams. I'm a long-suffering Texas A&M Aggies and Texas Rangers fan, but this fall I've got a new team to root for: the Heath Hawks kindergarten flag football team. My son is on the team, and I'm head cat wrangler/coach.
What’s your favorite movie?
Ask around the office and most folks would say it's Mean Girls. Ask my wife and she'd probably also say it's Mean Girls. To them I say: Stop trying to make Mean Girls happen, it's not going to happen. It's one of my favorites, but I think Hot Fuzz takes the top spot as my favorite movie.
If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
Learn to fly a plane. I've made a deal with myself that I'll get my pilot's license by the time I turn 40.
Why did you decide to pursue the career you have today?
I graduated from college in the thick of the Great Recession, and it was clear that the part time work I could find in my small East Texas hometown wasn't going to pay the bills. So, like so many other financially illiterate Millennials, I decided to go back to school and take on six-figures of debt to become a lawyer! Really, I grew up in Kilgore surrounded by friends and family in oil and gas, and I saw an opportunity to serve that industry as an attorney. I took all of the oil and gas, real property, and contracts drafting classes I could in law school and managed to score a law clerk position at an oil and gas title firm. Over a decade later, I'm still hoping to figure out what I want to do when I grow up.
What’s your favorite holiday?
These days, probably Christmas. It's a trip seeing how excited my kids get about the holiday, and I enjoy the time with our families.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Presiding over the CHS empire and flying a plane to my cabin in the mountains of Colorado during the summer months to avoid the Texas heat.
What 3 words would you use to describe yourself?
To quote the great Dwight Schrute: "How would I describe myself? Three words: hard working, alpha male, jack hammer. Merciless. Insatiable."
